This is usually the time of year when North Texans start to notice dry skin and chapped lips.

When cold air comes in during the colder months of the year, the air tends to be very dry.

We know this by measuring the dew point. The dew point is a measure of the humidity in the air and it is a good indicator of how humid it feels outside. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air.

That has been very evident this season. This fall is warmer than usual.

On Thursday, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport recorded its first record high temperature of the year. Friday, temperatures will also be at record highs.

This map shows high humidity over much of North Texas.

Skincare expert Louise Proulx, owner of Renew Beauty in Dallas and Frisco, says she hasn’t seen many customers complaining of dry skin this December. With cooler weather coming, she says now is the time to start preparing.

Proulx explains: “As the seasons change, so does your skin care. Make sure you’re using great moisturizers and active ingredients. “

Proulx recommends using products with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and peptides. They will protect and moisturize the skin. This is especially important because as the weather gets colder, we also spend more time indoors under the heat. When you run the heater, it reduces the humidity inside your home or building.

“We are seeing an increase in interest in oil-based moisturizers,” says Proulx. “The oils that customers are asking for are essential oils and organic oils. They are becoming more popular as people gain a better understanding of the active ingredients.”

“They really work,” says Proulx. Just be careful and choose carefully, she warns, as organic botanicals can sometimes be sensitizing to the skin.

Another reminder this time of year: sunscreen.

When the weather starts to get colder, don’t forget to apply the medicine. Proulx says it needs to be applied every day and recommends a mineral sunscreen. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean the sun’s rays aren’t harmful to your skin.
