Acne seems to be a curse to anyone who suffers its wrath. You can try many treatments and medications, but the problem never goes away. After going through two rounds of Accutane, I still get stretch marks from time to time and will do my best to cover my flaws. I have tried every diet, product and medicine, but the following are the main culprits for my volcanic acne.


You spend about eight hours a night, seven days a week sleeping on your pillow. Meanwhile, bacteria, dead skin and oil accumulate on the pillowcase and can clog pores. This is especially troubling for side and stomach sleepers, where their face is constantly in contact with this dirty surface. Try swinging between two pillows and sleeping on different sides whenever you go to bed. Ideally, you should wash your pillowcases every week, up to two weeks, to get rid of whatever is causing the breakouts. Also, consider buying a silk or satin pillowcase. They are gentler on the skin and do not absorb as much oil and perspiration as their cotton fabrics.

Too many skin care products

When you’re struggling with acne, you’ll be tempted to use every skin care product you find in stores and online. You can have a bathroom filled with spot treatments, scrubs, and masks. But this can actually aggravate your skin and cause more breakouts. Using too many active ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, can destroy your skin barrier, leaving it vulnerable to acne-causing bacteria. Instead, keep your skin care routine limited to one exfoliant, used two to three times a week, and one treatment product used daily. Breaking your skin care routine down to a few basic products will help soothe skin and prevent any adverse reactions from conflicting products.


If you sleep very little, you may notice whiteheads popping up all over your face. Bad sleep habits can affect your body, thus causing hormonal acne. It can cause the skin to produce more oil, causing clogged pores. Try going to bed early and getting 8 to 10 hours of sleep to prevent this type of acne. If you are an upset stomach, drink some chamomile tea and avoid any time before bed. You will definitely notice a lack of breakouts when you wake up completely rested and energized.

Dairy products

To all cheese lovers, I regret to announce that it may be the cause of your acne. My dermatologist told me to limit my dairy consumption as it could be the source of my cystic acne. After days of avoiding dairy of any kind, I noticed that my skin was brighter. This has been a common occurrence for people who give up dairy in their diet. If you’re upset about the news, you should try vegan cheese and unsweetened milk. There are so many plant-based options out there that really mimic the real thing – you’ll find something you like.

Once you realize what is the root cause of your bad skin, you will quickly have a clear face. From personal experience, it takes a week or two to notice a difference and a month for full results. But it’s definitely worth the wait.
