What you want to avoid are harsh mechanical exfoliants, which can cause damage no matter what your skin type or age. “Exfoliators with large particles like apricot kernels should be avoided, as they can cause tiny tears in the skin – at any age,” says Chilukuri. “Anything that’s too dry or used too often should also be avoided.”

As for how to use these scrubs at home, there’s not much preparation required – just make sure your skin is clean and free of makeup. “Don’t use a towel to apply an exfoliator,” says Chilukuri. “Use your fingertips or a sensitive Clarisonic brush. After rinsing off the exfoliant, immediately apply a moisturizer. When using the right exfoliator, you don’t need to stop retinol. Always use a great mineral sunscreen every day.” And you don’t want to overdo it. You don’t want to exfoliate every day, but a few times a week or once a week will help, depending on your skin.
