In my 30 years of skin care, there have been two game-changing products. One is CeraVe’s moisturizing face wash, which I choose to prevent breakouts and keep my skin as moisturized as possible. And the other is Aquaphor Advanced Healing Ointment. Chances are, you’ve heard of its moisturizing power and the protection it offers to dry, chapped, and injured skin. Sure, that’s its main purpose, but it’s also been helpful in improving the look of my wrinkles.

Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD is board-certified. He told us that Aquaphor is a true “multitasker”. It can be used as an eye cream, makeup remover or even lip balm. This is thanks to its simple (but effective) ingredients, which Zeichner says include a mixture of pure pertrolatum with lanolin (a type of emollient). This is a powerful formula that nourishes and protects your skin from head to toe.
In the case of wrinkles reduction, skin care alone can be difficult to actually erase them or keep them from forming. Because, well, life. But, Moisturizing your skin consistently can temporarily help and possibly slow the process. That’s where Aquaphor comes in. It not only protects your skin but also helps to lock in moisture. Excess moisture in your skin makes it look fuller, and as a result, wrinkles are less noticeable.
“While not directly an ‘anti-aging’ product, by hydrating and plumping the skin, it can even help minimize the appearance of wrinkles,” says Zeicher.
I have personally experienced this kind of amazing results in my skin care routine. After applying my nighttime moisturizer, I take a dime-sized amount of Aquaphor and smooth it over the wrinkle-prone areas of my face (aka the folds around the mouth, corners of the eyes, and forehead). The final step in my self-care regimen. Many people also do this in a process known as slugging. This is a K-style beauty trend that involves applying moisturizer all over your face in moderate amounts.
Personally, I notice an immediate change in my skin when I wake up in the morning. It is smoother and skin feels and looks more elastic. For context, I have naturally dry skin that tends to make wrinkles appear more obvious. But after using this ointment the night before on a regular basis, the fine lines around the folds of my mouth and forehead seemed to have become less prominent almost immediately.
Also, please note that Aquaphor is greasy and thick, so it’s important to be mindful of how much you apply. Plus, some skin types aren’t suitable for Aquaphor (or other moisturizers, like Vaseline). If you are unsure, apply only a small amount to an area of your face before applying your entire face. You can also use Aquaphor on other dry parts of your body, like elbows, heels, and knees.
